You uploaded a fresh avatar on Discord, but your old picture — or a blank circle — keeps showing up. Discord avatar not updating is one of the most common issues Discord users face, and it's almost always caused by one of a handful of known problems.
Discord has its own quirks: an aggressive local cache, server-specific profiles that confuse people, Nitro-only animated avatars, and CDN propagation delays. The good news: every fix below takes under 2 minutes. Start with #1 — it solves the problem for most people.
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Recommended Size | 512×512 pixels |
| Minimum Size | 128×128 pixels |
| Max File Size (Regular) | 8 MB |
| Max File Size (Nitro) | 50 MB |
| Supported Formats | PNG, JPG, GIF (animated = Nitro only) |
| Display Shape | Circle |
| Display Size — Profile | 128 px diameter |
| Display Size — Chat | 32 px diameter |
This is the #1 cause. Discord's desktop app caches avatars locally so it doesn't have to re-download them every time. When you change your avatar, the app may keep serving the old cached version.
Discord enforces strict file size limits on avatar uploads. Regular users are capped at 8 MB, and Nitro users get 50 MB. If your file exceeds the limit, the upload will either fail silently or throw an error.
| Your Plan | Max File Size | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Regular (Free) | 8 MB | Compress PNG with TinyPNG or similar |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB | Higher limit, but still compress large GIFs |
| Nitro | 50 MB | Animated GIFs up to 50 MB |
Check your file size before uploading. If it's over 8 MB (or 50 MB for Nitro), compress it using a tool like TinyPNG or Squoosh. For best results, upload a 512×512 PNG under 2 MB — this is well within limits and maintains excellent quality.
Discord supports PNG, JPG, and GIF (animated GIFs require Nitro). But it does not reliably support WebP for avatar uploads — even though WebP images display fine in chat messages.
| Format | Works for Avatars? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | ✅ Yes | Best quality, recommended |
| JPG/JPEG | ✅ Yes | Good, slight quality loss |
| GIF | ⚠️ Nitro only (animated) | Static GIFs may work for free users |
| WebP | ❌ Not reliably | May upload but fail to display |
| BMP | ❌ No | Unsupported |
| HEIC | ❌ No | iPhone format, convert first |
Convert your image to PNG or JPG before uploading. If you saved an image from the web, it might be WebP — right-click → "Save image as" and choose PNG, or use an online converter.
Discord uses a CDN (Content Delivery Network) to serve avatar images from servers close to you. When you upload a new avatar, the old image may remain cached on Discord's CDN for up to 30 minutes.
This is different from your local cache — even if you clear your app cache, other users may still see your old avatar temporarily.
Wait up to 30 minutes for the CDN to propagate. To confirm your upload worked, ask a friend to check your profile from their device. If they see the new avatar but you don't, the issue is your local cache — go back to Fix #1.
This trips up a lot of people. Discord lets you set server-specific avatars through Server Profiles. If you set a custom avatar for a particular server, it overrides your global avatar — but only in that server.
You might have changed your global avatar and wonder why it's not showing in a specific server, or vice versa.
Animated avatars are a Nitro-exclusive feature. If you don't have an active Nitro subscription, you cannot use animated GIFs as your avatar — even if you previously had Nitro.
Common animated avatar problems:
The Discord desktop app, mobile app, and web version (discord.com) handle avatar uploads slightly differently. An upload that fails on one client may work perfectly on another.
| Client | Common Issues |
|---|---|
| Desktop App | Stale cache is the #1 problem — use Ctrl+R to reload |
| Web Browser | Browser extensions can block uploads — try incognito mode |
| Mobile App | App version bugs — update to latest version from app store |

The most common reasons your Discord avatar won't update are: Discord's local cache still showing the old image, file size exceeding 8 MB, unsupported file format like WebP, CDN propagation delay up to 30 minutes, or confusion between server-specific and global profiles. Press Ctrl+R to force-reload the app first.
Discord avatar changes usually appear within a few seconds to 5 minutes. However, Discord's CDN can cache old avatars for up to 30 minutes. If your new avatar hasn't appeared after 30 minutes, try clearing your cache with Ctrl+R or restarting the app entirely.
Discord allows server-specific avatars through Server Profiles (requires Nitro). If you set a different avatar for a specific server, it overrides your global avatar in that server only. Go to User Settings → Profiles to check if you have server-specific avatars set.
Animated avatars are only available with Discord Nitro. Regular users can only use static PNG or JPG images. If you have Nitro and your animated avatar isn't working, make sure the GIF is under 50 MB and try uploading from the desktop app.
Discord recommends 512×512 pixels for avatars, with a minimum of 128×128 pixels. The avatar displays as a circle at 128px on your profile and 32px in chat. Upload a square PNG at 512×512 or larger for the best results.
